Bluegrass Band Contest Scoring Criteria

With the tremendous growth of the annual Eureka Springs Bluegrass Festival, several items have been noted as being critical for scoring the competition. These categories include Talent, Bluegrass Content, Stage Presence and Originality.

1. Bluegrass Content: Everyone has his or her own interpretation of what is and is not Bluegrass. Thus, our three-judge panel will include members with varying opinions of Bluegrass, covering the spectrum whenever possible. Bands should pick material carefully. In the Eureka Springs competition, the judges are Bluegrass professionals, and are likely to be unimpressed with song selections that are uninspired.

2. Talent: This category is self-explanatory--the act's vocal and/or instrumental skills.

3. Originality: Original work is encouraged. Cover tunes/traditional numbers are allowed but playing the recorded rendition lick by lick is discouraged; will not be looked upon favorably by the judges; and will be reflected in scoring.

4. Stage Presence: Over the years, the quality of talent has risen so dramatically that we no longer consider this an "amateur" competition. Most contestants have performed on stage enough to know that they are not simply playing music, but putting on a show. This category rates how "sellable" a band may be.

Also note: The judges will be paying close attention to the amount of time your group performs. Although we have limited the time allowance to 15 minutes, to go over that time will be detrimental to your scoring. Preferred playing time should be between 10 and 15 minutes. This time may also include introductions of your musicians.
